African Tales

Ever done artwork or a piece of writing for a client and weren't too partial to your effort at the time and then a couple of years later, it's kind've "grown on you"? That's happened with this little character I did a series of illustrations for in a reader for Macmillan Publishers a couple of years ago.
I still recall sitting and doing the pencil roughs of him at Mugg n Bean in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. It was a lovely day outside, a Sunday. I needed to get out of my studio for a while and polish off a piece of cheesecake and cuppa tea while I worked.
And a friend of mine who I admire much as a cartoonist and illustrator happened to chance by and, with a couple of remarks, gave me some excellent advice on how to make my character look younger and cuter.
Thanks, Rico.

Still a Sucker for the Feline of the Species

Working at a cat sanctuary as a volunteer (if lavishing love on cats could be called "work" - I think not!), I met this guy. I called him Oscar. He just epitomised the name, somehow.

Z is for Zulu

The Zulu tribe. One of the nicer things about Durban. This guy featured in an educational alphabet I did a while ago. Hopefully a series of alphabet books is in the pipeline. It's a groovy kinda thang to work with two of my favourite things - cartoons and alphabets.

Get a Job!

A term us freelance artists hear all too often. I had some fun a while ago creating cartoons for a book that was created with ideas for people who were unemployed to bring in cash for themselves with the resources they had.
Here's one of them.

Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Well, this is just unacceptable, this sort of time passing without a post. Purleez pardon me, everyone. What with relocations across the country and rather irksome readjustments, I promise to get it together shortly and post something even vaguely interesting around here.
